CONGRATULATIONS on his induction to the Michigan Construction Hall of Fame!
Born in Annaberg, Germany, Karl grew up in Jackson. The son of Schelling Homes founder Otto Schelling, Karl spent much of his free time as a youth on his father's job sites. Schelling Homes quickly built a successful reputation and grew from a firm that offered singe family custom home and light commercial construction to a firm that offered multi-family unit, subdivision, and low-rise professional office development.
Since 1958, Karl has been active in multiple trade associations, becoming the youngest president of the Home Builders Association of Jackson at age 25 and the Michigan Association of Home Builders at age 30. He purchased his father's interests in Schelling Homes and, as president, incorporated the firm as Schelling Construction Inc. He went on to own Schelling Construction, Schelling Development LLC and Schelling Real Estate, developing such projects as the Aviara Oaks Subdivision, Professional Village Office Complex and Westbrook Estates.
Karl has been a tireless advocate for Michigan's housing industry. He went on to serve in a variety of leadership positions within the National Association of Home Builders, leading a series of legal action efforts with the NAHB, including the Legal Action Committee, as well as the Legal Action Network for Development Strategies, Legal Research and Proactive Litigation programs. His work continues to provide a variety of essential legal resources for members of the housing industry and promote affordable housing development. Karl has been awarded life memberships to the boards of directors of the local, state, and national associations. He was also give a Lifetime Achievement Award by the HBAJ of Jackson in 2006.
In addition to his many contributions to the building industry, Karl is also known for his service as congregation chairman of Redeemer Luther Church and as a member of the Michigan District Church Extension Board of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. He has served as president of Jackson's Doctors Hospital Board of Trustees and was awarded the Detroit Metropolitan Convention and Visitor's Bureau's J. Lee Barrett Award for outstanding service in 1999. Karl is the proud father of two children, a grandfather of four, and a friend to many.
THANK YOU, KARL, for your dedication to the industry and to the HBA—at every level.
